Star Trek...BRING ON THE GAY

Sep 01, 2009 05:03

I was scrolling though wikipedia and two things caught my interest. The first is kind of funny, but the second actually got me worked up into quite a later.

Here's the first thing: Penley believes pon farr stories' popularity rests in the idea of men being subject to a hormonal cycle, observing that in slash fiction, the symptoms of pon farr are " ( Read more... )

It taught us that love isn't limited to traditional things and that an electric cloud can love a man and that's good

AMEN!

That gif never, ever fails to crack me the fuck up.

P.S., good lord postal system, how long does it take to send a postcard? It's like it's a big package with anthrax inside.

and we're not mentioning lesbians, as that doesn't count when it's socially acceptable for two women to kiss and it's even encouraged

There is so much wrong with the above statement in light of the fact your post is not asking for a gay kiss on screen, but a gay character on screen. You and other slash fans helping to perpetuate the idea that women kissing is "okay" but lesbians aren't important compared to gay males is what has always disgusted me about the fandom. The fact it's okay that two drunken girls kiss to entertain guys at a party does not make lesbians on television unimportant, especially given the fact that most television lesbians are simply viewed as women giving men visual porn and not as women in a deep, meaningful relationship equal to that which a woman has with a man.

It's for that very reason that I endorse a gay male character, because of the very stereotype with lesbians. Yes, it sucks that this is the truth about society: women can kiss, make out, have wild crazy sex, but always, always it's just about sex and just a fun substitute for a man. And because that prejudice is there, if Star Trek were to depict a true lesbian relationship, it would still not be championed or acknowledged because all 'red blooded men' and 'respectable women' will still ignore everything it's trying to impart. But a gay character is different because of it's own stereotype. Bisexual men don't exist, only limp wristed gay men who need to be ridiculed. If a gay man was depicted, there's no way it won't be acknowledged and be ground breaking ( ... )

So you're saying that BECAUSE non-gay women can make out on TV, NO actual lesbians should be on tv? That if the show made it clear that a female character is strictly a lesbian, that it would be LESS significant than two guys randomly kissing? You're saying there's NO WAY to show that a woman is a lesbian but that just by having a guy kiss a guy it's showing he's gay? "Bisexual men don't exist"? Yeah, well, look at tv shows WITH gay kisses--how many people justify THOSE as being straight? Krycek kisses Mulder and it has absolutely no sexual connotation whatsoever, etc., etc.

Wow. Yeah, I can't believe you can't see where that's wrong.

Who said anything about it not being wrong? I'm not saying it's right. You're also insinuating that I buy into the stereotypes, which like hell I do. I'm merely pointing out what the mainstream audience has to say. Also, I'm mostly arguing this point for just movies, not television shows, since the post is centered around the next Star Trek movie. Trust me, I'm a proponent for all LGBT rights, but it's not the point I'm trying to make. The point I'm trying to make is that we need to wake up an audience, and it won't happen with two girls kissing, no matter how awesome you make the storyline and their epic and wonderful love story. It's sad and it sucks, but it's true. It will still read as okay because of the stereotype. Now if they do go ahead and portray a true lesbian Star Trek character, I'll be pleased as punch and proud. I'm merely suggesting that we 'stir the waters', but if they make Chapel complete with devoted wife, it won't feel wrong at all for me. I can always wait for the next movie, where hopefully the next ( ... )

I really don't have the heart to sign up knowing that it's pretty obvious that nothing is going to happen in the next movie. Wet blanket indeed.
