For the second story, I think it would be an interesting plot twist if people continue singing the songs because they think it will be a way to fix the problems they have. It could be that somehow, the first of the songs is sung and bad things happen, but people think it's because only one of them was sung. So in the story the heroes are trying to find the songs, and sing them to restore order to the universe (so they think), when in fact singing the seven songs will destroy the universe. But the reader wouldn't know that either, so they'd be rooting for them to find the songs the whole time. Also, I like the idea that singing all of the songs again will remake the universe in a new way, rather than simply destroy it.
I'm borrowing a little from the Brandon Sanderson Mistborn series btw, which you should totally read. It's awesome!

I like both ideas, but I'm leaning more toward the first one. I recently read and reviewed a book with a slightly similar presence. You might want to check it out, as I think you'd like it: http://fantasybookcritic.blogspot.com/2009/06/alara-unbroken-by-doug-beyer-reviewed.html
