Yeah, that's about the size of it. There's a certain amount of oh, he's outside the official police department so he gets more latitude and so on, but not much more than in something like Bones. I suppose some of this is inevitable. Sherlock had a bit of a running joke of how the problems that people bring to private investigators that the cops aren't in on are just not going to be that exciting most of the time because the cops really do deal with a lot more crime now than they did, and all the terribly scandalous blackmail stuff that Victorian!Holmes lived on doesn't exist any more in the same way, so anyone trying to take on this role has to work with the cops almost always instead of only sometimes and it's hard to do that without making it a bit of a procedural

Yeah, basically. On the upside, there has been an amazing outpouring of love for Lucy Liu, which is nice. (This quotation (I am neither of these very amusing people, unfortunately) is a pretty good summary of the whole thing
