Enormous landslide destroys tracks and covers road

May 26, 2011 21:58

We've been having a huge amount of rain and three lines of thunderstorms rolled through, leaving some pretty heavy flooding in areas and devastation.

As I was working late last night, I found a road next to the main river around here flooded with an inch of water at some spots. Canadian geese and their babies were playing in the water but getting in my way. Some other roads were lightly flooded. Detroit got it worse, and several areas were pretty badly flooded, mostly roads that went under bridges.

The fun time began when I came up a 5-lane road I go down and found it blocked with construction blockades. I couldn't tell what was going on but I could see some trees so I thought trees had fallen over and blocked the road.

I took a side road and then parked by some tracks that overlooked the main road. I walked down besides the tracks but only got 100 feet before the ground ended. There was a sharp drop into a 50-foot chasm that had been carved in the hillside. The tracks sagged across the entire 100ft chasm. All the dirt and trees had slid down the hill and across the 5-lane road and into a park across from the road.

The disaster has been reported in the local news and there's plenty of pictures there to show the devastation.

It could have been worse. At least we didn't get those monster tornadoes this week like Joplin did.
