It's tough to see people in decline. My grandfather was abusive to his family, and at some point just abandoned them entirely. Before a stroke about five years before his death, I think I saw him a total of five times in my entire life even though his house was a 45-minute drive away. And even after that, I honestly felt bad for him when he was in the hospice dying of cancer.
To be blunt, watching a loved one go is not a pleasant experience. But it's one of those things that you have to experience, and you'll be a stronger person for it. There's no right way to deal with it; everyone has to find their own way to grieve.
Did your grandfather have a will? If so, then that would determine what would hapen to the car, the house, and everything else. Who will be handling his estate? It couldn't hurt to ask about the car.
