I hear it's nice in Hell right now....

In a previous entry (about three weeks ago) I was talking about how my faith in the Christian religion is waning, and maybe this whole court thing is God's way (well, if there is a God) of trying to get me to go back to being a humble follower. I hope that's not the case, it seems kind of underhanded for a God that's supposed to be all loving and ( Read more... )

Interesting fact: there's an apocryphal book of the Bible which is more or less an alternate version of Revelations. Near the end a concerned follower looks down from Heaven and sees all the souls in Hell, asks Jesus "Hey, if God loves everyone and is willing to forgive them for their sins, why is he making them suffer for eternity down there?" Jesus replies, "Well... you didn't hear this from me, but he is going to let everyone out of there eventually." (obviously not worded like that, but you get the idea anyway)

Not surprisingly that book didn't get put into the Bible because if everyone knew they wouldn't be in Hell forever, they wouldn't have much reason to be nice while alive.

I don't think the concepts of Heaven and Hell even make sense. People are good - they would band together in Hell and make the most of it. And meanwhile, people in Heaven would mourn the fate of their loved ones whom God cast downwards, and there would be sadness in Heaven.

Well, there's the question of what you say actually being possible. Would people be able to band together in Hell and make the best of it? Would people in Heaven really be mournful and sad, or would the pleasures of paradise distract them? I don't know. Of course, if no one will be down there forever, maybe that makes it better in some way.

..You think I should post this in that Christian community you often debate in?

Go for it. Someone else touched on something similar a few days ago, though; look back a couple of posts so you don't cover the same ground.
