“Hey Don, we got a new guy here, think you can show him the ropes?”
Donald Malarkey looked up from the disassembled motorcycle engine he’d been tooling around with for the past couple of hours to see his boss walking up to him with a clipboard in one hand and a greasy hand towel tucked into one pocket.
“Yeah, sure thing, boss,” Malarkey said, noting the tall fellow behind Caparzo.
Malarkey liked working for Caparzo, he was a good boss. Technically, it was Old Man Caparzo who owned the garage but he’d fallen ill years ago so it was his son, Adrian, who really operated the place.
Adrian Caparzo turned to the new guy and said, “Stick with Don here, he knows his shit.”
And with that, Caparzo walked away.
Malarkey looked the new guy up and down, all six plus feet of him. He was insanely tall and broad in the shoulder, like some kind of misplaced Viking with a crew cut in work pants and heavy leather boots that marked him as…
“Looks like a 1980 T140E Bonneville motor you’ve got there,” the new guy said.
Malarkey nodded. “You know motorcycles.”
“That’s what they hired me for.”
“Good, I could use the help.” He stuck his hand out, grease on his palm and all. “Don Malarkey. But just call me Mal, everyone does.”
The new guy shook Malarkey’s hand, not even flinching at the grease. “Brad Colbert.”
They nodded to each other and, without another word, got to work on the engine block.
It's the beginning of something awesome...
