I don't think there's a disparity--the good guys don't question Zoe's capabilities as a soldier. Ta ma de hundans like Rance treat women as property.

I don't think Zoe, even with a baby, would have been willing to leave Serenity, although I don't think anybody *else* in the crew with the possible early exception of Kaylee would have been too thrilled with having a baby around.

01. The part of me that loves fluffy happy endings can imagine Wash teaching the baby how to fly Serenity while waiting for Mommy to get back from a job. But somehow, I don't think it would have worked out that way.

02. Crappy hovercraft, definitely. To borrow a line from Mystery Science Theater 3000, "Just because it's futuristic doesn't mean it's practical".

03. I think maybe it depends on where the women are. Zoe is a soldier, a gunhand on an outlaw ship, so she is seen as equal. Women in more domestic roles on remote planets might be seen differently. And then there's things like in "Shindig", where Inara, as a Companion, is clearly respected but also seen as a commodity (remember how Atherton wanted to 'buy' her?)

04. One favorite- this exchange between Kaylee and Wash:

"Wash, tell me I'm pretty."
"Were I unwed, I would take you in a manly fashion."
"'Cause I'm pretty?"
"'Cause you're pretty."

And Kaylee's "Look, they got boy whores! Isn't that thoutful?"
