The thing that struck me most was how different the music was compared to the tv series score. Don't really have much to say about this, but I think they did the scoring better in the tv series. I found the Reaver theme in the series to be absolutely more appropriate than whatever they used in the film.

The movie differs from the series in so many ways that it's always rather jarring to me to watch it so soon after Objects in Space. The lighting, the music, the tone, all changed. Part of me sometimes feel like anger over cancelation of the series comes through, but that's probably just my imagination (or my transference).
While the character deaths are one of the biggest things I try to ignore about the film, it really wouldn't be much a film without them. As you said about Book, his death is a catalyst for Mal - who's finally had enough. And Wash's death outlines just how much they all had to lose. Either that or Joss is trying to tell us that healthy, mature loving relationships are doomed.
Another favorite line is Jayne's about some grenades being nice. ;)

I know it differs sooooo much! It didn't help that I only finished the series the week before I saw the movie for the first time either *pouts*
