What can we do is my big question, with the US economy tanking in the short term, peak oil in the medium term, and global warming in the long term, everything is in the air such that I feel I can't even plan for any of it. And Wall street just driving off a cliff with subprime mortgages (even though the problem was known of years in advance) gives me no faith in the market's ability to plan ahead.

Regarding peak oil, as far as I can tell it doesn't matter when the global production peak actually occurs because the production of oil available to the west will peak within 3 years.
