I think these guys (and it is mostly guys) feel that to "give the fans what they want" somehow takes the creative direction out of their hands. Fans have driven Damion Lindoff (probably not spelled correctly) off of Twitter with their constant haranguing over the ending of "Lost".
Artists forget sometimes who pays the bills. I always loved John Lennon and Paul McCartney's thoughts on trying to change a Beatles tune in a concert. They were against it totally because the fans come to hear it like on a recording (as they both did for concerts that attended) and they hated it when artists they liked juiced up a song.

It's definitely a fine line between pleasing fans and staying true to creative vision. I personally loved the end (with a few niggles) of Lost because it was emotionally satisfying. And yeah, there comes a time when fans need to accept it and move on.
Thanks for the Beatles story! There's something to be said for making your fans happy. :)
