New blog, and Defying Gravity

This week's blog is about babies. Well, not really. It's about the use of "baby" as an endearment in m/m fiction and how its overuse does. my. head. in. When someone starts calling his boyfriend "baby" three times a page? NO. Please stop. I beg you. Would love to hear your thoughts and whether it's just me who can't stand this particular term of ( Read more... )

Psst. The link to the blog is not working. Which is not good for me because I would like to write a long, frothing-at-the-mouth rant about my hatred for baby.

I enjoyed Defying Gravity and I thought it had real potential to become something great had it been given even half a chance by ABC. It's such a shame they screwed them over like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who has seen this show! I really did enjoy it. I was expecting very little, and now I'm going to buy it on DVD because there are deleted scenes and I want mooooore. It really did have potential. :((

You're not the only one who's seen it. I enjoyed it, too, although I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the last of it yet.

It was a good ending! Obviously they didn't wrap everything up with a bow, but I was satisfied. You should watch. :)

Re: baby.

I started calling my last...boyfriend/guy I slept with that as a joke and it stuck. We both think 'baby' is an irritating form of endearment, but we started doing it just to be annoying and then we'd find ourselves saying it in earnest.

We sort-of hated ourselves for it, but we couldn't stop.

Also, I feel like excessive use of pet names is annoying, and unrealistic. My family will throw around the occasional 'sweetie' (or 'ace' which was my parent's nickname for me growing up) but, more often than not, you use someone else's name.

Yeah, in my family there were occasional pet names, but not constant. Although some people have commented that they use pet names almost all the time, so it depends on the family/person.

Either way, in written form, I think they should be used more sparingly. I read one book where the guy called his boyfriend "Blue eyes" all the time and thought of him that way, too. It's just so clunky! It likely wouldn't grate as much if it were a good nickname!
