Star Trek Revisited Part V

Decided to re-watch the Star Trek films in order. It's been some time since I've seen them, and I never did watch the last two Next Gen films. Here's a few quick thoughts:

Star Trek: Generations: Whee! Off we go into the land of post-Original Series films! It's dark and scary in here, kids. Stick close, and keep your hands inside the ship at all ( Read more... )

I didn't care much for Generations, but I liked First Contact a lot!

Data was always my favorite Next Generation character, and I always liked Worf, Captain Picard, Dr. Crusher, and even Wesley.

First Contact had so much going for it: Strong storyline, time travel ( Love time travel stories!)
and The Borg!

The Borg Queen character was further explored in Star Trek: Voyager, but I love her best in First Contact. She was never bitchier than she was in that movie!

Loved the Phoenix, and yeah, the old school nacelles rocked!

Since Cochrane said in "Metamorphosis" that he was dying when he arrived on the Companion's asteroid, I just kind of assumed the idea that the Companion had somehow restored him to youth was self-evident and didn't really need any further explanation or retcon... and thus it made perfect sense that he looked older in First ContactI see your point about the Borg queen - but most screenwriters love conversation, and if there's a "character" that can't get much beyond "We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile" they just don't know where to go. Ironically, some of the strongest characters have spoken the least - some of Clint Eastwood's characters, for instance. It would have taken a fairly radical approach to keep them so uncommunicative even while experimenting on/with Data. I really do think they could have done more (generally, not just in this film) to emphasize that Borg use "personal representatives" (like Seven of Nine) when they're ( ... )

Well, that was what was so powerful and frightening about the Borg (to me, anyway): they had no personality, they could not be reasoned with, you couldn't argue with them, and they really didn't have time for conversation. They were a machine collective. As a writer, I thoroughly understand the need and the desire to have a centralized villain who will speak your clever dialogue and have nifty interactions with your main characters, but for the Borg, IMHO, it kind of neuters them.
