Quick Question

Sep 08, 2008 19:53

I lately have been asking questions but on my primary journal applebirdvero  anyway. I was wondering if eating nori in my salads will hinder the TTC journey? I've read that eating fish with high-mercury like swordfish are bad for times for conception.
TIA

Fish high in mercury are definitely bad for babies... I'm not so sure about when you're TTC.

I haven't read anything about Nori being really high in mercury... and I've been told that vegetarian sushi (rolled in nori) is still safe.

Can you bring this up with your health care professional and ask?

Nori is seaweed...not fish at all.

Actually, salmon isn't terribly high in mercury.

http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/fish/advice/
Quoted:
Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.

* Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
* Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

Sorry for double reply, but to add, what's important is the *age* of the fish. Salmon only lives five years at *most* so despite its size and diet, it's much safer than the tuna they use for steaks (which is older than tuna they can) or shark.
