An unintended consequence of of having a nation with a requirement for legal due process during a severe economic downturn is that sometimes states can discover that capital punishment is just too damn expensive. Three states legislatures have done cost analysis capital punishment and discovered that the penalty is a luxury that they can do

I don't know why, but this is sort of a mixed bag for me. Is 'life in prison' any less expensive?

Maybe they'll stop jailing small-time drug offenders, or the "three strikes your out" rule.
