Cheney's smirk helps make the comic, which is the nicest thing I have ever or will ever say about Dick Cheney.
But yeah, this just reminds me of the time on the campaign trail when someone talked shit about Clinton, and Joe was all, "SHE WOULD MAKE A BETTER VICE PRESIDENT THAN ME." The most chivalrous "gaffe" I've ever heard.
(I mean I love him as VP, but that is the kind of thing that makes you sound like a decent person. I guess he was able to at least publicly stay out of the giant rip in the Democratic party that was happening at teh tiem.)
Yeah, it was just a few days or maybe a week or two after his pick (and I'm still mad that I hadn't made a monetary bet on him being picked - he'd been on my short list for Obama's runningmate since he'd dropped out after Iowa!). He was working a rope line when some guy comes up to him and says something like, "I'm glad you were picked instead of Hillary Clinton," and Biden just sort of snapped back with, "She would've been a great pick. She'd probably be better than me." Networks picked it up as a gaffe, because Everything Joe Biden Says Is A Gaffe™.
I think he's got a crush on every woman in politics Clinton. His wife had a great story at some joint campaign event where, as she tells it, he came home and kept going on and on about how great it was working with Clinton, until she was finally like, "OKAY I GET IT YOU LIKE HER JFC."
