Happy Valentines Day! I <3 you and the way you've turned lemons into lemonade here.
1. I like external obstacles that ultimately can't be overcome, at the same time as internal obstacles are overcome -- for instance an arranged-marriage story where the love match doesn't work out because the families disapprove, whereas the "forced" couple eventually discover real love for each other. It's a kind of anti-Romantic instinct. Two of the books I recommended for this round follow this format (not saying which two since that would be Spoilerz).
...Or at least, I used to like this kind of story. Recently I've been becoming less repressed getting in touch with my inner romantic: now I like totally over-the-top stories of overwhelming passion, a take-no-prisoners approach to love that leaves both halves of the relationship deeply unhappy; however they are able to eventually work out their differences and negotiate a compromise, in the process growing as individuals
