Ahaha yes, given Mieville's distinctly ANTI-romantic tendencies, this was an odd rec for the theme, but Sonya DID say "failure to overcome obstacles" also counted, and I thought this was a pretty epic example of it. XD

I'm glad you enjoyed it! XD I mostly read Mieville for his batshit crazy worldbuilding, because it is AWESOME. I'm not always sure how I feel about how determinedly BLEAK he has to make everything, but I appreciate the way he can give everything a sense of epic scale, without using the usual plots/devices, and with all the romance stripped away.
