I also have this issue with estimation a lot of the time, in that I tend to do it by complexity rather than actual length. Well, also the other thing that screws it up is that tasks which are easy to conceive and plan can hit unexpected rocks and blow up.

I hear this gets better with experience, but haven't actually seen that happen yet.
