If one is a devotee of X, how can one be driven to perform acts that X would find horrific? How can you believe that the son of God wants you to explode buildings containing doctors, nurses and young pregnant women? Think the Prophet wants you to riot over a cartoon? Just like good marketing, the essence of a successful (notice I didn't say good) religion is not to stop people from doing things, but to make them feel justified when they do.

I often suspect the reason why the Bible, Koran, and Kojiki are so strangely written in abstract historical stories, rather than being written as textbooks is because stories can be interpreted, while rules are usually pretty firm.

I mean, really, how tough would it have been for God to add to the commandments.

"Hey, I don't like it when men have sex with men"

No, instead it uses the Lord's speech to Moses, through Joshua, to reflect this reality. It's like a game of holy telephone.

I think crazy people are attracted to whatever means will allow them to go on acting crazy. Organized religion is one of the last things on earth that will allow people to (attempt to) legitimize wacko behavior.
