Just like good marketing, the essence of a successful (notice I didn't say good) religion is not to stop people from doing things, but to make them feel justified when they do.

I often suspect the reason why the Bible, Koran, and Kojiki are so strangely written in abstract historical stories, rather than being written as textbooks is because stories can be interpreted, while rules are usually pretty firm.

I mean, really, how tough would it have been for God to add to the commandments.
