Imagine a setting where anyone might have an inner self. Another aspect to their personality that remains hidden. When it rises to the surface, it can endow the owner with mysterious powers.

Those who have the potential for this ability but lose it are left listless. Their lives no longer have any purpose, and they become almost soulless.

Are Shugo Charas significantly more invisible than normal mascots? Can people who can see normal mascots see them?

Most mascots and fairies are visible, but tend to hide so they don't arouse suspicion. Shugo Charas (and Heart and X-Eggs) in the series are invisible to all who don't have some kind of spiritual sense or have one themselves.

We'll probably be loosening this quite a bit, but they're generally harder to see than the average mascot.

For a couple in-series examples:

There's an old caretaker of a shrine who can hear them (softly) but not see them.

There's also a famous fortune teller and spiritualist who can hear them immediately, and begins to see them as soon as one of them talks to her directly or floats in front of her.

My experience is pretty much entirely Biscuit Hammer, which similarly has 'the mascots are invisible to anyone not involved with the secret magic psychic stuff', so.

i am certain that the similarities with this and madoka will mean absolutely nothing.

Well, with Madoka, you get your wish and then you get the power.

The Embryo is a specific artifact that you have to obtain to get the wish. Everyone wants it because there is no down side.
Except that nobody knows how to get it.

A Shugo Chara is who or what you want to become, but it's the Embryo that can grant any wish. Shugo Charas are basically the embodiment of your personal ambitions or dreams.

I would kill to see some Shugo Chara OCs. It's like the Happy Meal version of Persona!

I will admit.. this gives me a very interesting idea, not directly related but... I will have to gnaw on this some.

I thought that this theme was practically unheard of ._. not a cornerstone of the game!
