Jack's been skulking. This is not the word he would choose to describe the situation.
It's appropriate, though; he's been out of his room, but he's been very careful to avoid all but the bare minimum of people he needs to interact with. He got Sark sequestered in a room in a remote stretch of hall, with a webcam set up to monitor said stretch and feeding back to a computer in Sark's room. He's been keeping an eye on the journals, hoping for no catastrophes, and he's walked past the rehab quarters late at night when there's no one moving. (Saw a lion, pretty sure the lion saw him. He didn't stop to chat.)
Now, though, it's about time for him to start dealing with events like a responsible adult, so he's gone down to one of the custodial closets and found a steam cleaner, which he's filled and dragged into the lobby. There's a not insignificant amount of blood dried into the carpet and a not insignificant quantity of bleach in the steamer, and it's tempting to read both sides as a metaphorical battle the likes of which is still going on for everyone in the Hotel.
Maybe telling everyone that they were at the end of a dark time had been a little pre-emptive.
There's a very unhappy Jack methodically cleaning the carpet in the lobby, if anyone wants to try their luck in a conversation. Be warned, though: his conversations have been going pear-shaped with alarming frequency of late.
