Today is Caroline's eighteenth birthday. If anyone had ever told her that she'd be turning a year older in an alternate Chicago, she would've thought they were crazy. This time last year things had been so different, but they just seem to continue changing. Which is why, for tonight, Caroline is seeking out a tiny bit of normal ( Read more... )

Castiel has never been invited to a birthday celebration before.

He attended Veronica's party that was thrown for her, but this seems to be a much smaller and more intimate setting. He is touched that Caroline thought to consider him, but he has no criteria as to know what would be deemed acceptable for the situation.

He asked Libby. Libby handed him a cupcake and told him it was meant to be a gift.

It all seems simple enough.

At exactly the time he was told to be there, Castiel appears in the middle of the restaurant, looking around the room for a sign of the blond, before making his way over and handing her the cupcake. "I was told it was customary to bring a gift."

Caroline realizes relatively quickly that she doesn't have many friends here in Chicago. There's no high school for her to attend to bolster her social group, no cheerleading to take part in so that she can have a small gaggle of girls around her.

There's no Bonnie. No Tyler.

It's jarring, but she's trying to adjust. She's made new friends, just not the usual dozens. Castiel is one of them and as he awkwardly hands her a cupcake she smiles up at him.

"It's perfect. I appreciate it and I'm glad you came."

"You're welcome," he says with a nod. "Thank you for inviting me."

"I don't have many people to invite," Caroline admits openly. "I'm just glad the few people I could ask - actually showed up."

Incidentally, it's the first thing that comes to mind for Elena.

How the place is vaguely reminiscent to the Grill, or the closest thing one could get to it, anyhow. There was no way she was missing Caroline's birthday, and she's in attendance, with a wrapped gift in hand, scanning the place for sight of the birthday girl.

Jeremy and... yes, Damon, are not too far behind.

Worry not, Caroline. Elena had the talk with Damon about his playing nice tonight. Yes, Elena, that'll get him in line.

Elena did give Damon the talk.

It went about as well as one would imagine. He looked at her like he didn't know what she was talking about before insisting that yes, he is always on his best behavior. She has nothing to worry about. Something about how little faith she has in him (which is ironic if one thinks about how much faith that she has always had in him in every other area).

He's walking in behind them. It mostly has to do with scoping out the area. Damon takes in the entrances and exits, listens to some conversations happening around the restaurant.

So far, it seems fairly normal, which means Damon trusts it even less.

"Do you want something to drink?" This question is made to Elena after she's likely said hello to Caroline. "See? I'm capable of behaving."

Damon, it hasn't even been an hour yet.

"Sure, why not?" Elena asks. It's Caroline's birthday and it may as well be a genuine celebration. They can put pause on all the scheduled programming of chaos and uncertainty and have some normalcy for the night.

She wants that for one of her best friends.

"Damon, we just got here," Elena reminds him with that knowing look in her expression. She won't give him any props until the night is over and nothing has happened, and the barware hasn't suffered for it.

The last time they were in a place similar to this one, he got into a fight with someone for sleeping with their wife.

Also, track record.

Elena thinks she has the right to be concerned.

Damon will get her a drink and get himself a drink. See? He's so nice and helpful. He's on his best behavior here, Elena. Damon hands her a drink with a small smirk, pleased that she agreed to have one.

She should get a day of doing whatever with her friends while he keeps an eye out because... that's what he doe.

"But so far, I've been more than extremely well behaved," he reminds her right back, and he knows why she would feel the need to have that talk with him after all.

Though he has to say, he had no idea that woman's husband would be at that bar. Hell, he didn't know she was married at all. It didn't really enter the conversation before they had sex with each other.

Damon has a way of making women forget about their significant others sometimes (not compulsion, just by being him).

"Feel like home?"

Damon is here.

It's a party in a public setting. Their track record for parties is not a good one. Someone ends up dead most of the time, and Chicago is just as unpredictable as Mystic Falls if not more so because the threats can come from anywhere at anytime.

There is enough going on and enough that he has to worry about, he wasn't going to let Elena attend the party alone. It sounds like a recipe for kidnapping or disaster.

Damon ordered a drink, and he's sticking to the back, not because he's listening to Elena's little talk but because it gives him a better view of the entire restaurant this way so he can see if anyone suspicious enters.

this is probably a recipe for disaster sitherequietly January 7 2012, 17:40:09 UTC
Castiel has been told that parties are an opportunity to be social. While he normally isn't a social creature, he is trying to make an attempt to fit into the human world better, and he's choosing to see this as an exercise in whether or not he could.

He doesn't know that Damon really isn't the kind of person that he should make attempts at being social with, but that's not really Castiel's problem. He's alone, and Castiel feels this makes him an easy target to approach.

So he does.

"Hello."

[OOC: IDEK if you remember cause I just barely did and looked back, they met during the dementor attack. >> Castiel saved his life, and Damon was an as. I don't know if he'd still approach or not, but I read back and it's a pretty hilarious interaction. :x]

Damon looks up when Castiel approaches. He has not seen the guy since the whole incident where... he saved his life- his unlife, and Damon proceeded to not believe a word that he said.

"If it isn't Mr. Glow Worm, himself..." He says with a small smirk. "Swooping in against any more dark, cloaked figures lately or is that just a May thing?"

So about Damon behaving? It may actually be impossible.

LOL OMG THEY DID. /facepalms sitherequietly January 8 2012, 17:44:59 UTC
In order to avoid the narration's fail, Castiel is aware that Damon behaving is impossible. However, he's also known for being able to take a verbal beating, mostly because he doesn't understand sarcasm.

Case in point:

" ... I was unaware that the dementors had returned to Chicago."

Confused angel is confused.

Buffy is bringing Sam with her for several reasons. One, they need to get out more. They did go on a rather awesome date at Christmas without any interruptions -- Rift or otherwise -- but just because they had one, doesn't mean they can't have more. She encourages having more. She thinks having more is a very good thing.

Two -- she likes spending time with Sam. That is a given.

Three -- she's still feeling awkward about the whole 'naked Damon in her room' thing, plus newly added tension with Angel falling through the Rift, and she needs to remind herself that before that happened, she was happy. Is happy. And none of that has to change.

Granted, walking in the door to the party and seeing Damon across the room? Not what she is expecting. Which may cause her to stop dead in her tracks a little awkwardly. With Sam right behind her.

Maybe this isn't such a good idea.

Sam's feeling awkward about all of those things combined.

He still hasn't sorted out how he feels about the Angel thing. He doesn't shove his feelings down like Dean has a tendency of doing, but that doesn't mean he's all that great at them, either. He's been a moody thing, but he's agreed to come along because he also likes spending time with Buffy.

That's also very much a given.

"...What's Damon doing here?" he asks, glancing over at Buffy. Small world is very small.

Small world is very, very small and Buffy isn't entirely sure how she feels about this. But then again, friends come in all shapes and sizes. There is probably a story behind this that Buffy doesn't already know, and it's not her party. She can't dictate the guest list.

Besides, Damon is clothed. Buffy can make it through this without her imagination getting in the way.

Probably.

Hopefully.

"I ... don't know," she says, before turning and glancing back to Sam. "I didn't know Caroline knew him."

"Fair enough." Sam tries not to make a face. He doesn't even know the birthday girl. He's not about to ruin it by showing just how little he's liked this Damon jerk. Sam will also try not to let his annoyance get in the way--even if Damon was naked in Buffy's room.

The guy was naked.

And had to be oh so charming about it.

"How did you meet Caroline?" he asks instead.

Shawn is Shawn. Because Shawn is Shawn, his birthday present for Caroline is a macaroni collage in her likeness, and a card. Shawn is eternally twelve, but really -- at this point in his life, what can you do?

(It's also not really in her likeness, but it is at least vaguely Caroline shaped. That should count for something.)

When he arrives at party, he looks around and sees a few familiar faces, but none that he knows really well. Personally, that's what a party is for. And out he goes, into the foray of being social.

When she spots Shawn, Caroline excuses herself from a small conversation and heads over toward him.

"Shawn! You made it!"

Once she's near him, she'll hug him, because of all the people not from Mystic Falls that she'd met in Chicago - she'd hung out with Shawn the most. A total of two times. That fact did make her realize that she really did need to get out more.

"Thank you!"
