a well-deserved gift

[ A few days ago, Mr. Magorium was met with the surprise of his life.

And, given how long a life his has been, it was some surprise.]

Edward Magorium steps outside of his toy store and home in proper gear this afternoon. His scarf is candy-cane striped, his jacket is puffy and brown, and his shoes are-well, the same. His toes are freezing, but that's ( Read more... )

Dusty has been positively giddy since Christmas morning provided a Stradivarius for her enjoyment. It's the most beautiful sounding thing she's ever heard.

Of course, she's out of practise, so her fingers are a bit sore, and thus she's out and about in time to catch Mr. Magorium's announcement. The store looks interesting enough, his announcement intrigues her, and there's a "Help Wanted" sign in the window.

The moment she steps inside, she knows that this is not your normal toy store. She keeps her wings close to her back so she doesn't knock anything over, and just stares, breathless.

"Oh, WOW."

Theta is right behind her, one hand holding hers as they move. His eyes are wide and fascinated and he's not quite sure what to make of everything.

No, that's a lie, he knows what to make of it, he thinks it's utterly amazing.

He wants to look everywhere but has no idea where to start, so for now, he's going to just follow Dusty and be in complete and utter awe of the entire thing.

This place. Is magic.

Dusty hasn't quite realised that it's literally magic, yet. That'll come soon enough.

"Wow."

Look, people finger painting!

"Theta, c'mere!" She grabs his hand and pulls him over to where the kids are fingerpainting. "Look, there's an open easel. Let's paint something!"

He's a bit entranced by the entire thing really and when Dusty calls for his attention, it takes him a moment to respond.

he studies the children, then looks to Dusty, a bright smile on his face and nods.

He scuffles over to the empty spot and the studies the paints for a moment before carefully dipping his index finger into the blue paint.

Now this is something he can do. He's not an amazing artist but he is good, he picked up the skills when he was trying to remember. It was easier to draw pictures and the better he was, the clearer the memory became.

So he starts painting, a sky in twilight and the two of them watching the stars unfold against the sky.

"Excuse me," Millie calls out, having been utterly charmed by the scene before her. "Wait a minute!"

She has a cup of hot cocoa in her hands and a wide smile on her face. A display like that? It deserves a treat and she doesn't have much to offer besides the things in her cart but it's certainly something.

Mr. Magorium hears the voice and stops, turning on his heel with a curious look on his face. "Yes?"

And then his eyes widen just a fraction.

Look at that cart!

"Oh, my."

Millie is quite proud of her coffee cart. It's a new one she got for Christmas and it's bigger, more colorful and may or may not be dimensionally transcendental.

"This is for you," she offers out the cup of cocoa. "Free of charge. I thought you might like it." She grins at him. "You seem like the kinda fellow'd like a good cup of hot chocolate.".

He looks at the cup, leans down to inhale the scent, and sighs a happy sigh.

"Wonderful. Delightful. Thank you, miss."

The way to his heart is, sometimes, through his stomach. Mahoney always made the best chocolate chip cookies. He takes a sip and smiles at how perfectly warm it is.

"You make a very good cup of cocoa. And that cart is unlike anything I've ever seen, which is saying something."

Helen happens to be walking by just as the fliers are released. She grabs one out of the air and reads it, looking to the building. She doesn't know if it's always been there and she's just missed it or...

Shaking her head, Helen steps up closer and cannot help but smile. "Wonder Emporium indeed." She begins to make her way inside, because curiosity will always get the best of her in these situations and she cannot help but find out just what exactly is inside.

The simple answer is this: Everything is inside.

He sidles up to Helen and grins. "Looking for something specific, miss?"

Helen turns casually to the man at her side and smiles.

"Hm? Oh, no- I was just... browsing." She takes another quick glance, marveling at the place. "Is this all yours, then?"

"Browsing, yes. That's a good word. Browsing."

Mr. Magorium looks around the store with her, then extends his arms and beams. "All of it! Top to bottom, roof to base-well, no, the basement is Bellini's. But everything else, yes!"

Never mind why Shaylee came into the Wonder Emporium. Because if you ask her, she'll just say that she wanted to check it out to find out how lame it was. But secretly? This feels almost like home, in a way. It's like magic is alive in the building. And more than that? Some of this stuff makes it super easy to play pranks on people.

Currently, Shay found a remote control air plane and is directing it from a big cushy chair, dive bombing people at random and cackling each time she makes someone flinch.

Hermione caught one of the fliers zooming past her in the air, and her curiosity is something remarkable. The world is filled with magical things, and these magical things help one's knowledge grow that much more. She doesn't separate one with the other.

Learning is magic.

She steps into the store due to this sheer curiosity, narrowly avoiding the air plane. "Oh!"

Shaylee lets out a loud laugh from her spot on the oversized chair. The plane shifts, circles around and comes back for Hermione. From the other side of the room, Shay may have started adding sound effects as the plane dives back down.

From this distance, she can't make out exactly who it is that she's going after, but she's not going to let them get away so easily.

Hermione narrowly avoids the air plane, and then she's out in search for who is controlling the toy. Once she does, her eyes narrow as she sets her sights on Shaylee.

"Oh, honestly," she says, though there's almost an amused twitch to the corners of her lips. It's absolutely impossible to be sore about anything in a magical place like this one. It's utterly infectious. "Having fun there, are you?"

Lena is out with her surrogate nephew.

His tiny hand is tugging hers along, and Lena is only happy to oblige. Holidays are his favorite, and so is the snow. She fixes his snow hat and that's when she hears him gasp.

That's when he sees it. The store. The toy store.

"Aunt Lena!" Max says, his eyes filled with excitement as he points toward the store. He drops her hand and starts racing toward it down the sidewalk. Lena calls after him, quick on his heels, and together, they stop in front of it, both with similar awe-like wonder.

Vaughn's not what you could call a childish man. He's uncomfortable around children, and is very, very lucky that he is an only child, because otherwise he would have to venture into toy stores every year, assuming he had nieces and/or nephews.

That being said, there's something different about that toy store. Vaughn is drawn to it, staring up at it in wonder but not quite ready to go through the front door.

And that's when the woman and the young child show up by his side. Vaughn remembers being a kid, and going out once with his father to shop for a present for his mother for Christmas. He glances and the woman and smiles slightly, leaning in to open the door for them both.

"After you," he says, the smile growing wider.

"See? He thinks we should go in and explore, too!" Max declares boldly, grinning up at Vaughn with that childish, hopeful expression that kids are wont to have. He's missing his front teeth, so the smile is made all the more childish for it.

Lena laughs and lets herself be tugged, before she looks back at Vaughn with a slight smirk on her face. She murmurs a polite thank you at his opening the door for them.

Max zooms into the store like his pants might have actually caught on fire.

"Ever seen a toy store like this one before in your life?" she asks Vaughn, scanning the wondrous place. There's simply no other word for it.

Vaughn chuckles a little bit. "Of course you should go in!" he tells Max. "You need to see what's inside, at the very least!"

He nods instead of saying 'you're welcome' and steps in behind her, taking it all in.

It's just. There's so much to look at, so many little sounds Vaughn can pick up, so many kids running all over the place and not just kids but adults too, teenagers and... he doesn't really know what to do with it all, except gape.

"Never," he says, almost breathing the word. "I mean, I didn't go to a whole lot of toy stores when I was a kid, so that may not be saying much, but..." he shakes his head, staring in wonder and amazement.
