We are so fragile...

Sep 13, 2011 22:38

He doesn't know what time it is, can't remember how long he's been here or how long he's been awake. The sun rose, he knows that and it's still early in the morning. The birds are singing and there's lot of traffic. It's not been very long since they found him though, since they started teasing and taunting him. He knows that much ( Read more... )

It's amazing how quickly people go scattering when a shotgun goes off.

Dani keeps her gaze trailed on the biggest of the group as he takes off in a direction different from the others, gun still balanced carefully on her shoulder. Once she's certain they're all gone and not coming back, she slowly lowers her weapon, then drops onto her knees beside the injured man.

"Hey." Her voice is quiet, gentle. "They're gone. It's okay."

Dani slides the key into the ignition and starts the engine, but doesn't immediately pull away because his question has seriously confused her. She looks over and blinks at him, head tilted just slightly to the left.

"It... what, the car? Um. I call it Sawyer when I'm upset. It doesn't like to start sometimes, so..." She trails off, feeling a little silly. She's never told anyone that before, but he did ask.

And she really hopes that's what he meant, otherwise she'll feel really foolish.

"Sawyer," he echoes with a nod. One hand moves to stroke the car as if it were a pet he seemed to be fond of. "Hello, Sawyer."

He looks out the window, not saying anything for a moment. "There was a ship. She was a good ship and we traveled in her. Her name is in the book. She was such a good ship, a good person. She sang to me."

He turns to look at Danielle again. "It's just a car, right? Twenty first century, nothing like her exists yet." he smiles a little sadly.

She almost wants to tell him not to be nice to Sawyer because he's named after a jerk, but she decides against it and pulls away from the sidewalk. The city traffic is, thankfully, on the light side today.

"Just a car," she confirms, glancing at him. "What kind of ship? Sea? Air? Or space?"

Dani's money is on space.

"Time and space," he informs. "TARDIS. Time And Relative Dimension In Space."

He looks at her and smiles. "She liked being a tree. Or a cabinet. There used to be another one, a blue one. Always a blue box alwaysalwaysalways but that was--"

He falters, blinking and biting his lip. "Long time a ago. Longlonglong. Different lifetime, different person."

Dani silently thanks whoever the hell may be watching over them as they come to a red light, because she otherwise may have rear-ended somebody. She visibly flinches as Dan's memories are triggered at the mention of the TARDIS, and she immediately knows why she thought this man looked familiar. A lump forms in her throat; she swallows.

"I see," she says, voice cracking.

And she says no more but continues to look at him until a car horn from behind breaks her out of her trance.

he doesn't mind being watched and settles in comfortably, his eyes closing as the car comes to a stop. He likes rides, likes feeling the ground move beneath his feet but he doesn't mind it stopping either.
'
'Really, he just likes trraveling.

His fingers play with the pages of his book, thumbing them as he considers looking inside, pulling his name out for her but he waits. he can do it in the house where he can write her down, keep her in his book and remember who she is. She deserves that much, for everything she's doing.

As she drives, Dani carefully considers his words.

Different lifetime, different person.

It sounds a lot like her own life, and later she might draw the parallel between his name issues and her own. Not Faraday, she thinks. Hawking. Widmore. Never Faraday.

She's silent for the rest of the drive, which doesn't take long. Roughly twenty minutes later-with traffic-she pulls onto a sparsely populated street and into the driveway of a large house with a high, wired fence around the backyard. There are bushes lining the front and a few leaves on the lawn from neighboring trees.

As she kills the engine, a thought occurs to her. "So, um. It's kind of messy inside, and... you're gonna see some writing. Kind of... everywhere. It's not all mine. You can just ignore it."

He almost falls asleep on the way there, his mind being lost in the rhythm of the car and the feel of the earth spinning around them. It's easy to lose yourself nin that feeling if you let yourself, he does it a lot, usually when he's not having a good time of things.

The car stops though and it takes him a moment ot rile himself out of his stupor. "It's all right," he assures. "it's all right. There were words where I lived. I put them there. I wrote so I would remember. Wrote everything down to keep them somewhere safe." He smiles and touches his book. "I put them in here and on the walls and under the table where I* slept. I put them everywhere."

She put some of the words there, but you'd never be able to tell which. The handwriting-all of it-is shockingly similar. Still, she nods over at him in acknowledgment and unbuckles her seat belt, opens the door.

"Are you steady enough to get out on your own? Or... I can come around the side."

He undoes the seatbelt and opens the door, puttihng his feet on the ground.

"Just...The world is still moving, still spinningspinningspinning. Have to wait for everything else to stop." He still feels like he's moving in the car. Once that feeling goes away, he'll be good but he just needs a second.

Dani's going to move over to that side of the car just in case. She's got the rifle again, swung around her back this time. Her expression is one of faint concern, and she waits silently.

His eyes go to the rifle and he doesn't twitch exactly but he does seem a bit awkward,a bit uncomfortable with it. He doens't say anything though, just waits for his body to catch up with the reality of the situation.

Taking a breath, he blinks, reaching out and taking her hand. She may get leaned on as they walk into the house but he'll try not to, he'll attempt to do it on his own. Because he should, because no one should have to hold him up.

She's careful to walk at a pace that seems comfortable for him.

Never let it be said that she isn't accommodating.

Theta may notice that the deadbolt lock on the front door has a little extension under it. Dani sticks her index finger under and against it, and the small green light atop it turns green. Only then does she insert the proper key in and open the door.

TECHNOLOGY IS AWESOME.

"The shower's down the hall to your left," she says, leading him inside. "There are clean towels you can use and I'll get you some clothes to change into. And, uh. What do you eat? I don't have much, but I can probably make... something."

He listens, nodding his head and heading towards the bathroom before he forgets where to go. His mind is fuzzy and odd, it's not on straight, things like that don't really want to stay right now ( ... )

After enough time passes, the seed of concern that was sitting in Dani's stomach sprouts. The water's been off for a while, which means he must be finished, so she decides to check on him.

And she hopes he's okay.

When she finds him standing in the hallway, a bit of tension releases from her shoulders. "Oh," she says, and blinks. "Hey. Are you hungry yet? I have enough to whip up a sandwich or two for you, if you like turkey. So I can... do that."
