We are so fragile...

Sep 13, 2011 22:38

He doesn't know what time it is, can't remember how long he's been here or how long he's been awake. The sun rose, he knows that and it's still early in the morning. The birds are singing and there's lot of traffic. It's not been very long since they found him though, since they started teasing and taunting him. He knows that much ( Read more... )

"Hey! Hey!"

Buffy doesn't like bullies. She doesn't like the way they operate and she doesn't like what they do. And she certainly doesn't like it when they gang up on a poor defenseless guy. There are four kids against one person who seems too beaten down to be fighting back, and this? This is where Buffy usually steps in.

One of them turns and fixes her with a glare. "Leave it alone, bitch, or you're next."

"You really don't want to do that."

The biggest one steps up to try and get her out of the way, and it's over before it even starts. He lands on the ground hard, and the rest of them are staring at her, as though they're trying to decide what to do. She smirks, before holding her hands out.

"Who wants to come at me now?"

Smart boys -- they decide they have better things to do. Buffy lets them disappear, before moving closer, crouching down and placing a gentle hand against the man's back.

"Hey, it's okay," she says softly. "They're gone."

It's strange and fast and he doesn't understand what's going on until she's crouching down and talking to him. Nothing makes sense until she's looking at him with concern in her eyes and kindness in her voice.

She says they're gone and when he closes his eyes, reaches out, he can feel them fleeting, running far away because they know it's a fight they can't win.

he blinks, stares at her, and then remembers that he's bleeding.

He should stop that.

He wipes away at the blood but it doesn't stop. His nose hurts. His mouth hurts. A little bit of everything hurts but that's all right, he can handle it, he's used to it. It's just...more than usual.

"You made them go away, he says quietly, still lying on the ground. His tongue darts out to catch new blood that's forming against his lips.

"That was very nice of you." A smile that almost hope3ful.

Maybe she's nice. Maybe she can be a friend.

She returns the smile, using him shifting position to get a look at his injuries. They didn't seem to be life threatening, at least from what she could see, so no rushing off to the hospital. That means they could sit and talk for a while.

"I don't like bullies," she says softly. "And you seemed like you could use a hand." And this is what she did, regardless of who she was helping. It's her job. It comes with the whole 'being a hero' package.

When she smiles, he smiles more because he always does that. People smiling always make him happier, make him feel better. He likes to think he's doing the right thing when he makes someone else smile and that's good. He likes being good, likes being right.

To those men, he wasn't right. He didn't belong. He wasn't supposed to be there.

He squeezes his eyes shut and mutters softly to himself, trying to reassure himself that it's all right, that it's gone now, that they're gone now.

But they're right, he doesn't belong. This isn't where he's supposed to be. He's having more and more trouble remembering where home is but it's not here.

But there's someone in front of him, someone who's talking and nice and who chased people away for him.

"I was a hand," he says with a silt of his head. "I don't need another one." A pause, then he considers. "Oh, wait."

"It was still very nice of you," he decides after a moment. "Thank you." He holds out a hand, wiping some of the grime off of it first.

She reaches for his hand and shakes it gently. She lets the comment about being a hand go, before responding.

"You're welcome," she nods. "I'm Buffy. What's your name?"

Buffy," he says slowly. "Buffyfbuffybufffy." He reaches out, moving to scrawl her name out with his finger against her skin. BUffy. He'll remember that. Maybe. If he's lucky. She's not anything in his mind yet, maybe a protector, something safe but nothing concrete. SH's not light or feathers or anything like that.

She could be though, he wants her to be.

"My name..." He blinks. I don't...don't ask em now," his voice is almost pleading. "Don't. Not there, it's broken. Everything's jumbled up and wrong, it's mixed up, I won't get it right. Don't ask me now."

His hands have gone to grip at her arm and his eyes are pleading with her to work with him, to not ask him again because he won't be able to give her the answer he wants.

It's there, it is but he can't reach it right now.

"Okay! Okay." Her hands rest against his arms, warm and comforting. "It's okay. I'll ask you later. When things are less ... jumbled."

She starts to push up onto her feet again, moving an arm to support him. "C'mon. We should take you to see a doctor."

"NO," he says with a shake of his head and he's suddenly moving, backing away from her and trying to get back into the corner of the alley that he had been calling home. "Nonono, not a doctor. Not the Doctor."

He swallows hard, curling in on himself. can't see him. He won'l..No. Can't do it, won't do it. I'll stay here. He doesn't need to know I'm here. I'll be all right here. Safe, I'm safe here."

He's lying to himself, that's more than obvious but he's going to tell himself that if it means he doesn't have to see the Doctor, ot face him while he' so broken and wrong. Not that he ever isn't broken or wrong but now he's bleeding and the words go wrong in his mouth, he knows he can't see him now.

"What, what?" Buffy isn't expecting this kind of resistance, and when he starts pulling away from her, she knows she's said something wrong. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ... who are you scared of?"

All she said was a doctor. He must have had a bad experience to be reacting this way.

"DoctorDoctorDoctor." he shakes his head fiercely and the motion makes his head spin and he3's curling in on himself, trying to make the world behave. "Can't go, can't see him. I'm broken. He'll see I'm broken. I'm wrong anyway, don't belong. Shouldn't be here."

He looks up at her, smiling wide, wiping away some of the blood. "I'm fine! I'm better. I get better. It takes time but I get better."

He does heal quickly, that's not a lie, it just takes a little longer than it would for a normal Time Lord.

"Wait, wait, slow down," she says softly, reaching for him slowly. She didn't want to make things worse, but she's not sure she can make them better either. "This Doctor, he might not be here. You fell through a Rift."

"Riftrfitrfit." He says it quickly, processing the words as he does so. "Rift to Chicago. There's not Rift in Chicago. Not where I'm from. Nonenonenone. SO not here, I know that. Knew it already."

He takes in a deep breath, closing his eyes and looking at her. "There's no Doctor here."

"No," she says, shaking her head. "No Doctor-Doctor. But there's a medical doctor. I just want to make sure that you're okay."

Really, that is all she wants. She just isn't sure if she's going to get it.

He considers this, considers her for a moment then looks back at the little nest he's made himself in the alley. "If I go away," he starts. "Someone's going to take my spot. You can't leave your spot."

But he doesn't feel well, he keeps seeing stars and so much of him hurts, even more than normal.

"Is it far away?"

isaywe_party September 22 2011, 15:34:34 UTC
"Trust me. I can find you a much better spot. It's got a bed and everything."

Beds are better than dirty alleyways. At least in Buffy's mind. "And no, it's not far at all."

"I don't like beds," he says. "Beds are for breaking, for darkness, for when you can't thinkfeeltouch.," He looks up at her. "Are there pillows? I like pillows. And the flo9or. There aren't pillows here."

Nodding his head, he gets to hsi feet unsteadily, using the wall for support. His head is spinning and that's obvious. The world is off center, even more than normal and he has to try and get used to that. "Hope you're right,{ he says with a weak smile. "Because I'm not going to be very good at walking."
