[Backdated to yesterday because I fail.]

A year ago today, a strange man appeared in the middle of Chicago and promptly disappeared.

A year is a long time. Compared to the six thousand years he’s been watching the earth, it may seem like a blink of an eye, but when you’re living it-when you’re on that Earth, interacting with the people around you and fighting for your own place in that world, it can seem like an eternity. Yet at the same time, it all happens so quickly. Time passes without a second thought, each minute turns into an hour, a day, a week, and soon months are passing without so much as a second thought as to how the city is changing, how her people change. He is one angel of the Lord, and in this Chicago there is nothing special about that. There’s no power with that.

If anything, he could say that his time in Chicago has been humbling, if nothing else. The Rift has a way of making you see your flaws, and for a being that isn’t supposed to have any, it can be an altering experience. Not that he wasn’t aware of his shortcomings before arriving here, but Chicago has a way of making you see them in a different light. They aren’t disappointments-they’re just pieces. Pieces that may not fit the way you want them to, but they part of you nonetheless and acceptance is usually it’s own reward.

A year ago today, he reintroduced himself to his best friend, became trapped in a world he didn’t understand, a world of scientific theory and principles, and shortly before this year comes to a close, Chicago changes on him yet again. He knows that Dean is gone from the second it happens and the feel of it hits him so hard that it’s almost crippling. The Rift takes a piece of his family from him, and for that, he does not want to be in Chicago. So he leaves. He travels around this version of Earth, reacquainting himself with the sights and sounds, seeing the differences and embracing them as best he could. This place is his home now, whether or not he likes it. Whether or not he appreciates it.

Dean would return one day. It’s the nature of the Chicago they live in, but that doesn’t make it any easier to bear. He knows the world that’s waiting for him, and it’s not a life he should be forced to lose, only to suit this particular angel’s comfort. It’s selfish, and yet it’s what he wants more than anything else. He misses his best friend, more than he could ever explain.

Today, Castiel reappears in the middle of Chicago, on a bench in the center of Grant Park, his puppy, Gabriel, at his feet. It’s a quiet day, but a good day, for better or worse. He takes a breath, closes his eyes, and for a moment, just listens.

Today is a good day to come home.
