The next thing she's going to do, she thinks, is buy a new messenger bag.

Rachel Conway is standing at one end of a trail of her personal belongings, on a sidewalk in the middle of Grant Park. She was walking home, shifted her bag on her shoulder, and the next thing she knows the clank of metal and the thump of non-metal on concrete is heralding the mass exodus of her stuff from a tear in the seam of her bag.

It was a cheap bag.

So maybe she shouldn't have overloaded it with wrenches, screwdrivers, a flashlight, books, and various and sundry things that are somehow necessary to a girl's daily business.

Mostly.

Anyway. She surveys the mess, draws in a deep breath, and sighs, exercising a very extensive vocabulary under her breath as she crouches and starts picking things up.
