It's so quiet I can hear my thoughts touching every second

It's 4 am, and Luka is sitting at an all-night diner. She's got a mug of hot chocolate and a plate of pastries, and she sitting and drinking the hot chocolate while she reads through her journal. She's welcome to interruptions.

Babel woke up at two. One thing about no longer having a job is that one's sleep schedule gets fucked all to hell. Not that she had a fairly regular sleep schedule before that, given the Kashtta and all, but it's gotten worse since she hasn't had somewhere to be regularly.

So when she poked through her journals and saw Luka's note, she decided pastries were a good idea and wandered on over to the diner. Not that she has money for pastries, but that's okay. She's perfectly happy to just have company; she can always get something from the Kashtta's kitchens later on. Or maybe stop by the Conrad; that's better stocked and she hasn't been over there in a long time.

"What kind did you get?" she asks, poking at Luka's pastry. "Do you ever sleep? Doesn't feel like I do." Poke, poke. Well, at least the frosting on it is delicious; she licks off her finger and smiles at the other girl.

"This one's apple. There's also strawberry and blueberry and lemon," she says, pointing to the plate. "You can have some if you want. And I did sleep for a little bit, but I was having bad dreams so I woke up. Been having bad dreams more often lately."

Babel yoinks the lemon one, which happens to be the one she poked a lot, and bites into it. "Delicious!" she declares, as if Luka didn't already know that.

She furrows her brow, then nods. "Dreams, yeah, they're..." she's not sure where she was going with that sentence, and neither is the narration, because she just trails off to stare at her pastry. "Hard to sleep with them. But at least there are other insomniacs out there. The city never sleeps."

Luka nods at Babel's declaration. "Pastries are my favorite," she says. "Especially ones with frosting."

"Usually when I dream it's about the Laboratory," Luka says. "Except when I dream about it it's usually worse. Even the times when it's just a memory it's bad enough. And I can never go back to sleep again when I wake up from those dreams. At least I don't have to sleep that much." Luka goes silent for a bit as she noms on her pastry some more. "I like being out early, watching all of the people wake up and come out of their houses, all the businesses getting ready to open for the day. It's very peaceful."
