...I'm dicing with destruction.

A rift opens up in Millenium Park, and out tumbles a petite, dark-haired, darkly beautiful woman. She hits the ground on hands and knees and then falls to one side, panting. Her hair is disheveled, her clothes marked here and there with streaks of soot or tears in the fabric. (The clothes are also a couple of sizes too large for her, for anyone ( Read more... )

Martha Jones happens to walk by her, noticing the string of curses immediately. It could be any reason that she's angry, and it's probably not going to help for Martha to ask but she's a compulsive helper. If the woman gets angry at her too, Martha can walk away.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Usually.

She stops behind her, standing near but not too near.

"Are you alright?"

The Rani turns at the sound of Martha's voice, regarding her thoughtfully. Humanoid. Sentient. This was a good start, at least.

"I..." She tries on a polite-yet-confused expression. The last part, at least, is not so much pretense. "Pardon me. I realize this will sound rather a ridiculous question, but... where am I?"

Martha winces and then her expression turns apologetic. She's suddenly very glad that she stopped to ask.

"It... doesn't sound ridiculous," she says quietly, thinking that she really ought to be used to giving this speech by now. "You're in Chicago. 2009. It looks like you've just fallen through a Rift. They're breaks in time and space. I'm... afraid there's no way back to your own world."

It's always best to hit the main points quick, right? It's like pulling a band-aid off. The quicker, the better. As if anything can make this situation more bearable.

"Ah. I'm--"

On Earth?

"...in America, then? That's a bit unexpected. And I can't go back?"

Of course she could bloody well go back, she just had to get into her--

Oh.

Right.

No TARDIS.

She shakes her head, bringing one hand to her forehead, trying to pull herself together. "Forgive me, please. I'm afraid the experience has left me a bit rattled."

There is a kitty in Grant Park.

Of course, there are a lot of kitties in Grant Park. This particular kitty is boxing her reflecting in the bean--a reflection which occasionally seems to be doing its own thing, bobbing up and down to avoid Cy's paws. She pauses in her game to look up at the Rani. Robbed of its playmate, her reflection stops to look up as well.

"Hi bombadier," she says. "You've got a timer in your head."

The Rani turns, expecting to see a person. When she sees no one she turns the other way. And then for good measure she rounds the sculpture.

There's no one.

No person, anyway.

As she approaches her original position she spies the cat looking up at her. She regards it for a moment and then she snorts out a laugh.

"Right. I've bloody well lost it if I think a small feline was addressing me."

"Cats don't talk." Duh. Cy makes a few half-assed attempts at cleaning one paw and gives up. She's mostly clean anyway--Ragnar makes a point of grooming the little cat thoroughly whenever he sees her. Cy stares into space for a second, either contemplating her last bath or just having a momentary short-circuit. Probably the latter.

She shakes herself. "I'm Cy for Sign Me Up."

"Sign you up for what?"

The Rani crouches, forearms resting on her knees, and stares at the cat.

"Right. Since you inexplicably speak--tell me where I am."

Xellos is floating by, examining this new city in all it's modern wonder when he happens to observe something most intriguing. It's not just her injuries that interest him, but the swirling sense of confusion. Most definitely worth a closer look.

He teleports down beside the woman and stares at her from a few feet away, a smile adorning his child's face. He giggles a little, both because it should get a reaction and because he wants to see how it sounds with his new girlish voice.
