Didn't I say the world was cruel, didn't I? (You did, you did...)

Shilo's shaking as she runs out of the room, and she doesn't know where she's going, but anywhere away from him. Killer, murderer, repo man, and it all means the same thing, and she can't get that to coexist in her head with the word fatherHer breath is rasping in her throat as she stumbles down the dark hall, turns the corner and... something ( Read more... )

The Conrad, Des has found, is a good place to hang out to avoid doing anything stupid... Not that he's really much for the avoiding of anything stupid so much as his trail keeps going cold and, well, Martha spends a lot of time here these days and nostalgia sometimes dictates that he explore a bit.

Which is why he's coming up on the Rift room around the time that Shilo shows up. Congrats, Shi, it's your lucky day! ...Or not.

He edges carefully into the room. "Well, this is familiar. Used to be I couldn't get three feet from this room without someone coming through- guess I haven't lost my touch." He shoves his hands in his pockets and smiles. "Welcome to Chicago."

Shilo jumps at the sound of a voice, spinning around to face him and staring at him wide-eyed for a second. But he doesn't look like any of the GeneCo employees she's run into so far, he's not dressed like any of them, and-

"Chicago? That's not... I was at the opera?" It comes out as a question. She didn't exactly mean it to, but controlling her tone while she's panicking... is not going to happen.

And cue Des's protective instincts towards all things tiny and scared and helpless and girl in five... four... three... two... One...

"Yeah... You might want to sit down for this." He pulls one hand out of his pocket long enough to gesture to the couch and then proceeds to run his hand through his hair and grimace. "I'm Des, by the way."

Hey, if he's going to have to explain why her life sucks, she might as well know his name. Or his nickname. Maybe he should have told her the whole thing and see if it could get a laugh out of her.. 'Cause, you know, that might help.

Shilo looks to the couch, and then back to him. She'd sit down, but it's been a long night, she's scared and incredibly confused and just now, doing what the strange man tells her to do isn't on the top of her list of things she intends to do...

Instead, she wraps her arms around herself, hunching her shoulders a little defensively. "I'm Shilo. And whatever you're going to tell me, just... say it. I'll be okay." It can't be any worse than everything else she's heard and seen today.

Shilo turns around quickly to face the girl, and almost steps back before remembering just what's behind her. Better not.

"It's alright, I didn't really mean to be here..." That response, she realizes, makes no sense at all to most people. Now that she looks at the girl, she's dressed kind of oddly too... "Where am I? If you can just tell me how to get back to the opera, or if you know where Rotti Largo is..."

If he can just get her her cure... That's all she wants right now, except for maybe the world making sense again. She'll take her cure, and it'll make this whole crazy night worth it.

Oh. Oh, this girl must be like her - fallen through to somewhere she shouldn't be, and she doesn't realise it. Daine grimaces a bit. "Um... I don't think you can," she says uncertainly. "Get back to the... opera, did you say?"

She stops, trying to think of what to say and how to say it. "That's a portal. It only goes one way, I guess, and... we're stuck here, until someone finds a way to reverse it." Another pause, and then Daine steps forward, offering her hand. "I'm Daine."

Shilo frowns at her, trying to process the words. It's been a long day. A really long day, and nothing's making any sense anymore, least of all this. But she takes Daine's hand, because what else is she going to do just now?

"I'm Shilo... What do you mean a portal? I didn't even walk through it, I just turned around and..." She breaks off. She's breathing too fast, and her head's starting to spin a little. She's fine, she's fine, she just needs to... breathe...
