This little girl breaks laws...

Ahhh. Chicago. Heart of the Midwest, if some are to be believed. Certainly not the worst place to come from.

Chance Adams would know, because she does come from the worst place to call your hometown. Peoria is a shithole if you ask her, and even if you don't. She'll probably tell you anyway ( Read more... )

A tiny, Indian boy comes sprinting around the building on the corner. He has a Polaroid camera wrapped around his neck with his fingers curled around the straps. Jamal isn't paying attention to anything in front of him, but keeps turning his head to look behind him. This presents a problem as he doesn't even see Chance on the corner before he barrels right into her with a yelp which sends him flying backwards landing on his butt on the pavement.

"Have English class in India," Jamal explains, but preens a bit at her comment anyway. He could understand that it was a compliment. Yes, he's picking up on it all quickly.

It would be very comforting for him to hear someone speak in Hindi for a little while at least.

He smiles, because it wasn't just class where he learned. "Lived on train. English on train."

Chance nods. "That's awesome," she says. "I wish we had cool classes like that. I had to take French, which I sucked at, but..."

She trails off, blinking. Oh. Well. "That's... really cool too," she says. "So wait, you like, lived on a train? How did you... how did you manage that? I mean, I guess I could live on one if I really tried..."

Probably not though. She's impressed, Jamal.

"Oui?" Jamal waggles his eyebrows and grins.

Apparently they had the occassionaly person speaking French on the trains, too. He has no idea what that word means though, just that French people use it.

"Lived on top the train," he explains, because it's any sort of explanation at all to say that they lived on top of it. "Money. Food. People. All on train. Good life."

Better than living with Maman.

"Gah!" Chance proceeds to fake-vomit at the French word. "God, I'm so glad I don't have to be in school right now."

And then she blinks at the whole 'lived on top of a train' bit. "Wow... You're like, hardcore. Like, super super hardcore."

Really. She thinks that's just badass. She's kind of dumb.
