He thought he saw Pagiel while he was wandering around the city earlier (no, he doesn't listen to advice for his own safety, shush). He doesn't feel like going back into the Conrad, because Des'll be there, and for some reason, right now, he really can't handle having his best friend there for him.
He wishes, so badly, that he could go home. It's almost tangible.
So, instead of going inside the hotel, he wanders into the park and flops onto a bench near Jacob, letting his head drop into his hands.
Anything could be happening to her, without him there. Absolutely anything.

And then he settles into a more friendly, charming smile and slides himself closer to the newcomer. "Hey there, stranger!" he calls out, brightly.

"Jacob. You from around here?" He slides onto the end of the bench Mathias is on, still friendly, allowing the closer contact and increased focus to do its job.

He approached him a little nervously, trying to judge the man's mood, "H-hi, you're that bloke who had the cards, right?"
