O brave new world that has such people in it

Samus has been many places and seen many things in her lifetime. She's experienced a great deal of surprising events, indeed some of them on her own ship before. Surprise attacks, surprise visitors, strange transmissions and calls for help. She's never held the delusion that her ship's a complete sanctuary, only that it's as close to one as she was ( Read more... )

Samus nods in acknowledgment as she processes the new information. The planet Earth...reasonably close to where her ship had been drifting. If she could find a craft of some sort maybe she could find it again. But that second part...2008 by the Gregorian calendar. She is only loosely familiar with the archaic date system used Earth when it had been more inhabited, but quick mental math lets her know the year was pretty far into the past. There goes the "finding a ride home" idea.

Samus examines the man - Jeremy, he said - for another moment. He looks reasonably human, and she knows from history lessons with the Chozo that humans, her people, originally came from Earth before they decided to branch out, so it's a fair assumption in this time and place. But she also knows looks can be deceiving. She wishes she had her Power Suit to confirm this suspicion, but shakes that thought away. She doesn't have it, and the chances of getting it back, from what this man said, are slim to none. Best to grasp that fact and move on, unsettling and ( ... )

Samus doesn't add anything to her coffee at first, weighing her options with the little packets on the table, trying to bring herself to relax a bit more. She takes one of the little packets of creamer that came with the coffee and opens it, pouring it in, then reaches for the sugar.

"I'm sort of what you'd call a 'specialist'," she says at last, stirring her coffee with a spoon. "I used to hire myself out almost exclusively to my former employer. It's easier to be a free agent and not answer directly to anyone. I took jobs either too dangerous for the standard officers or jobs involving things they don't want the general population knowing about."

And Jeremy grins at that, slow and delighted. "Always best being a free agent. But then, I don't much like authority, and I really don't play well with others."

And on that happy note, they have pie! And, for Jeremy, a good deal of other food, as well, but he's going for the pie first. "Normally, this is dessert. But I really like pie." And it's blueberry.

Further creepiness and cryptic comments shall be temporarily put on hold due to PIE.

Samus examines the pie, a little curiously at first. It's not that unlike something she'd had growing up. Different color, texture looks different, but the concept, at least, rings some bells. Considering she's in a public eating establishment, she doubts there's any trick to it.

She picks up her fork at last, using the edge of it to cut off a piece before spearing it, and takes a bite. It tastes different than what she had in mind, but it's good. Sweet. If she gets a chance to, she'll find out what flavor this is so she can try it again in the future.

But for now, she continues their conversation, adding her piece offhandedly, as if she understands Jeremy will be preoccupied with eating and it'll probably be a bit before she gets any response. "I'm not the sort who deals well with authority, either. Or people, for that matter."

Something of an understatement. Samus Aran is the lone wolf bounty hunter, almost as legendary for how difficult she is to work with as the results she produces. But he doesn't need to know that right now.
