The problem with good, though, is that it's relative. After all, he'd done good in his life. If you counted all the families he'd saved and all the evil sons-of-bitches he'd taken out, the score was firmly in his favor. Sure, he'd made a few mistakes, but that was just being human

No, really. Bored stiff. Yes, things are happening, but he's not allowed to be part of them, and Sam's doing fine, so what is there for him to do? He hasn't really felt up to playing his games lately, or watching his movies, or even really hanging out with Nate, because every once in a while, he could swear he catches Nate watching him with this worried and almost nervous expression, like he's afraid Mat'll snap and take a gun to them all. Or himself.
And he hasn't gone down to the sub-basement yet. Heard creepy stories about it, but hasn't gone down. And it seems like as good a place as any to be alone and miserable.

"You mean you don't want to live."
"Dad, I'm not going to die just because I go to college!"
And his breath catches in his own throat as the damn thing settles on the ground.

"Oh! Uh... sorry, are... were you..." he blinks for a moment, then asks hesitantly, "Are... you with Torchwood? 'Cause I haven't seen you and I didn't think they had hospital gowns but I mean I don't pay that much attention, so..." his ramble sputters to a stop almost as abruptly as it began.
Never let it be said that Mat Wallace is anything but a walking ball of awkward.

That's the first thing that strikes him like a hammer between the eyes. John's a little out of his depth here, way out of his depth, but he's a smart man and above all an observant man. He knows to trust it when his gut sends him a sign and right now it feels like it's sharing space with his heart.
Not Sam. But fuck if he didn't look like him.
"I'm with nobody and no one. I thought I was in a hospital. But this don't look much like the room I was in, so I'm a bit confused.
"Torchwood?"
