and i'm really freaking out

Harry Dresden is starting to get really worried. In a few short months, three of the only people he knows have gone missing without a trace. First Rose, then Shepard, and now even Sonja has vanished. Not even tracking spells have helped him figure out what's happened. At least if they were dead, he could find the bodies. This is different, they're ( Read more... )

Penny is around the Main Gauche, sticking inside just in case. Luckily, she's not giving off any pheromones today. She notices people when she's looking to notice them and she's fairly good at reading people, too.

She walks over to Harry and smiles, gently, but there's concern on her face, too.

"Are you okay? I'm sorry, couldn't help, but notice you looked..." Penny waves a hand vaguely in the hair. "I don't know. Not... happy?"

Harry bites back the first response that comes to mind, especially when he finally looks at her. He's seen her around a bit, but never spoken, and it just seems rude to go off on a stranger. Especially when she hasn't even done anything to deserve it.

"Just a little breakdown, nothing major," he says, but a tremor in his voice gives it away. "People vanishing with no warning, that sort of thing. It's like everyone I touch gets cursed." He frowns. That's something he actually hadn't seriously thought about until just now. Lash would have detected something like that, but this world's rules seem different somehow. "I guess I'll have to check for that." And wouldn't that just be the icing on the cake?

Penny frowns at his explanation. She hasn't noticed any of that, but she's only been here for a short while.

"I'm sorry," she says I had no idea... I mean, I hadn't heard about people disappearing, but- What? Do you think the Rift could have done that to you? Cursed you so that people you come in contact with simply vanish? That's really harsh. My friend, Billy turns into a meerkat. I somehow make people fall asleep... even when they're driving, but... I'd be grateful if that's what the Rift gave you."

"God, I hope not." To be honest, Harry hasn't really paid attention to any changes of that sort. The other Wanderers he's spoken to have mostly discovered new abilities (or lack of previous abilities), but there hasn't been anything like that for him. Not that he's noticed, anyway. "Maybe I got hit with a cross-dimensional death curse," he thinks out loud. He's certainly pissed off enough people that it isn't outside the realm of possibility.

He shakes his head. Dumping all his problems on random strangers seems to be developing into a theme. The least he can do is introduce himself. "Sorry, I'm Harry Dresden and I'm really not as crazy as I look."

Buffy is drawn to trouble. Nothing she has any control over, it just seems like no matter what, if there's something going on, she'll find it. Whether that trouble consists of vampires or crazy mayors trying to become demons or just a friend in distress is kind of up in the air, but... you know.

She's just taking a walk through the courtyard, trying very hard not to think about how much she misses home and her friends and... everything, and initially passes by Harry, only half-noticing him. It takes a couple seconds before something clicks in her head, and she stops, turning around to frown at him.

"Are you okay?"

"Pay no attention to the nutjob behind the curtain," Harry mutters to himself, raking hands through his hair. "I don't know," he says to her. He doesn't, really. "People are going missing, have you noticed? They're not even dead! Just gone. It's not normal." And it had to be them, didn't it? He's become strangely attached to Shepard and Sonja since arriving at the Main Gauche, and the thought of not seeing them again hurts. "I feel so goddamn useless."

Buffy moves a few steps back toward him, crossing her arms over her chest and tilting her head to one side. It's not like she knows him really well or anything, but he was nice enough to her when they first met, and over the journals, and she likes him.

"I haven't noticed, but my social circle these days mostly consists of the teenagers of the Main Gauche." It's an interesting assortment of people, and she likes all of them, but a bit limited. "Maybe it's the Rift. Can it do that? I mean, from what I've heard it's kind of a one-way sort of thing, but..."

"Could be. But it's never that easy, and it doesn't explain everything. Sonja's from this Chicago, and that didn't stop it from snatching her up too. Next thing you know, we'll find out it's some invisible demon monster going around eating people. And I left my invisible monster traps at home." It sounds paranoid, but stranger things have happened to him. Often.

"What I wouldn't give to deal with a nice straightforward zombie apocalypse." He rubs the back of his neck, aware that he probably looks like a nervous wreck. Hey, truth in advertising. "I had a pet zombie tyrannosaurus once," he says instead. "Best war horse I've ever been on. Not much says 'get the fuck out of my way' like a gigantic dinosaur running at you."
