Cole hasn't heard from Rose in a long, long time. And it bothers him. He realizes, of course, that it's not safe to be outside his new room, because in the hotel there's archangels and outside of it there's demons. But he's worried. Really, really worried. So here he is, out on the streets of Chicago looking around desperately for her.

He keeps thinking he's seen her, keeps having to backtrack to convince himself that he hasn't missed her. But then, he swears it her. He knows. "Rose!" he calls, pushing to get closer to her. "Rose!"

Rose turns at the sound of her voice being called and smiles when she recognizes Cole. She looks exhausted, and a little off, but not bad. It's how it goes, for her. Relieve the pressure and suddenly you feel better. So she stops, and waits for him to catch up.

"What're you doin' out Cole? It's not safe what with Romana bein' insane and all!"

Cole finally catches up with her, and pauses, bending over to catch his breath.

"Hadn't... seen you... in a while," he gasps out. "Wanted to... to make sure you were okay." He lifts himself up again and looks at her. "You are okay, right?"

Because nobody's really okay, least of all her.

Smiling a little, Rose rests a hand on Cole's shoulder. "Of course I am. I'm with Torchwood. Not many safer places to be, yeah? I was just bored, so I wanted to go for a walk."

One lie after another. She doesn't really think of it as lying, though. It's just protecting people from her pain, just making it so they don't have to hurt too. Because that is how Rose rationalizes things.
