Katie is jogging, she hasn’t got round to convincing herself that punchbags are fine yet and she still hasn’t quite got up the confidence to start practicing with her miscellaneous forms of weaponry again… So instead she jogs, or runs, or simply strolls.
She’s grown a fine appreciation for walking over the past twelve months, she’s not rabidly obsessed by it but she still likes to do it.
What that all boils down to is: hello Jack, have a rather puny looking teenager nearly jog into you and spring back with a blush.
“Um, hi, sorry.”
All said with yet more blushing involved, especially because she doesn’t like running into anybody.
Jack looks up, blinks once. It's a mark of how preoccupied he was that he didn't notice her until their near-collision.
"Hey," he says, flatly. No offense, Katie, he's just had a rough night. "Don't worry about it."
He looks her over a little longer.
Oh, he knows demons come in all shapes and sizes. It's still interesting to see - assuming she is a demon, and not a human. Malek said there were wanderers here.
Even with the conviction that demons are no inherently worse than angels, his hindbrain insists on assuming things as though they are.
“Nah, no problem” really, don’t worry about it Jack, Katie didn’t really notice you either… And she doesn’t have a good excuse in the shape of an apocalypse.
She’s just not very observant at times, not very centred on real life.
At other times though… Well, let’s just say that she notices the flatness in Jack’s voice, takes a good look at his posture and decides to try and be a little less jumpy and instead try for the welcoming approach.
Her chances of success are definitely very low.
So instead of babbling like she usually would she smiles slightly and nods “yeah, not for long mind but about a week and a half or so.”
Frankly she doesn’t look as if she would survive a week and a half even away from a lot of demons, she’s small for seventeen and the constantly scared look that lurks just in the back of her eyes and the defensive cast to her posture hardly speak of hard street fighter or anything close to it.
He nods. Well, that's interesting, in the sort of way that it's... not, really. In that he can't allow himself to get involved with the domestics here. Can't just move in.
"Nice place," he says absently. "Looks like Elashte thought out all the angles."
For some reason, it just seems wrong to refer to him by pseudonym within the bounds of the Main Gauche.
Shepard has seen Jack before. It's been a while, of course, but she has seen him before, and she remembers him.
Frowning suspiciously, she comes up behind him and says, evenly, "Thought you were with the Conrad. What're you doing here?"
Best way to gauge a threat is to "interrogate" it, in her mind. At least, when it's actually something that talks. The Geth didn't talk, not in a language she could understand, at least. So interrogating them was generally out of the question.
Jack turns, takes in the person accosting him - and freezes.
Inwardly. He's too well-schooled to let it show, but everything between his throat and pelvis seizes up, and he puts on a neutral frown before anything else can infiltrate his expression. He's pretty sure he knows this woman - by repute, if nothing else.
"I've heard reports from various sources," he says. "As to why I'm here, I'm surprised you haven't heard. I'd thought it would be all over the journals by now."
He puts his hands in his pockets, refusing to give any ground. If Shepard is allied with Elashte... that puts a tinge on things he's not sure he's comfortable with.

"Commander Shepard, I presume."

Well, actually, you should probably believe most of it. But Shepard won't admit that.
