Is he out of the shell in both pictures?? It's hard to tell.

I wonder if he's getting too big for his current shell.

Yep, the swirl on his back is just the way his body is.

There are plenty of other, larger shells in the tank, so I don't think that's the issue. Usually when they want a new shell they go straight from the old to the new and spend as little time as possible uncovered.
