We had an unexpected guest at the Shabbat table where I had lunch last Shabbat. He was a friend of my hosts, and a man whose company I had enjoyed on previous occasions at their home. When he arrived, the hosts rushed to set a place for him. Then he informed them that it was Ramadan (Ramzan, as my Muslim friends call it). The host asked, "so aren't you fasting?" He replied in the affirmative. The guest was too polite to inform his hosts that he was fasting until he was asked directly. He sat and regaled us with his characteristically amusing anecdotes about trying to find a suitable wife, while we consumed copious amounts of homemade culinary magnificence. Despite my own experience with religious fasts, I was impressed by his willpower. Reading this post from you reminded me of that delightful lunch.
