2nd installment in my book review series. I have two more all set and ready to post but am staggering them because I don't know when I will have time for a new one. I've been sick all week and haven't gotten any reading done. My head is still not quite up to focusing on much right now, but hey I've moved up from 24/7 napping through cartoons up to ( Read more... )

Oh, now I know what you meant. And yes, I agree and it stood out for me as well, though I think that I somehow got used to the thought that they were only 12 or 13. Probably because teenagers nowadays here in my country have changed so much and during my practice at school or also because I live near junior high school I see a lot of teenagers around that age doing similar things - smoking, swearing, hitting on older boys, most probably also drinking. They seem to want to grow up quicker then they should. I would never accept it, think it's okay and something 12-year olds should do but I see them doing this in real life, that's why I wasn't that amazed.

Oh of course I see all that stuff too, and I wasn't exactly an angel myself; though I think when you become an adult your attitude towards that changes--you want to shelter those kids as long as possible so they retain their innocence. (Though I must add that I wouldn't think 12 year olds sleeping with 17 year olds is very normal--in fact in my state it is illegal, and I wouldn't hesitate to report such a situation).

All that said, I think it is one thing for these things to happen in real life and another for them to be represented in such a positive manner in the media. 12 year old girls are reading these books thinking, 'wow, I haven't done any of those things yet, I need to get going!' and that just perpetuates the problem more and more.

I do also see why you enjoyed the book, and if I hadn't seen the show yet or been younger when I read it I probably would have felt the same way.
