I am shocked you've not tried Xinwang it's been serving reliable HK style cafe food since I first arrived in 1999 (the original one on Changle Lu) and since then they are all over Shanghai (one next to my office on Hankou Lu, another inside Infiniti opposite Times Square etc).

Not only do thy do breakfast but from 2pm to 5pm they do afternoon tea sets for even cheaper than their normal cheap prices. You can get a bowl of noodles with luncheon meat (what you call spam) and egg with toast and jam and scrambled eggs and an iced lemon tea for bout 20 rmb!

It's a real shame to hear about the drop in standards at Cha's. The queues are still insane (passed by last Thursday night at around 8pm).

Not sure if you've reviewed Tsui Wah but that's a real HK chain that's opened in Shanghai and their pork bun comes with a side of delicious fries FTW!

I was SO thinking of you when I made this post, thinking "I bet he replies" hehe.

Yeah they're so close to us, yet we never bothered to go. I was eyeing their sets but it's all in Chinese so we can't read it *cries*

We went there again tonight, dragged my parents there hehe. LOVED it again. Don't think w'ell be going back to Cha's.. not worth it esp the queues.

I like Tsui Wah too http://beverly.livejournal.com/718803.html! Both in HK and here. But Xinwang's so so so much closer..

Yes to be fair my HK connection is much stronger than yours so perhaps that's why I know it. And when I first came to SH in 1999 you can imagine how few decent places there were to eat (we're all spoiled now) so Xinwang was a 3 times a week kind of place. And you'd always see other HK friends in there too but that hardly happens now as they have more branches so people just go to a closer one. Also popular with the 4am clubbing crowd, it's pretty funny to see people in full clubbing outfits and big boss types with their 20 year old fluzzies.

Texting you and commenting here at the same time is weird!
