This week, we went on a crazy domestic god/goddess cooking binge. We infrequently cook at home, because 1) groceries are expensive here unless you buy them from the dubious local supermarkets, 2) dining out is relatively cheap assuming you don't go to super high-end restaurants and 3) we live smack in the city so lots of dining options around us ( Read more... )

Mmm, all three look great! Do you guys get your avocadoes and tortillas from City Shop? I actually really like shopping at the "dubious" markets here - I guess that's one of the differences between expats and "more local" people like me (I actually grew up here and went to international schools all my life :D)

Avocados I get from the big fruit shop outside my place.. they're awesome :) But tortillas and fresh vegetables definitely from City Shop!

Why are the local markets dubious? It's probably a North American thing, but I keep reading about the local food movement and locavores.

it's china... the veggies are kind of strewn everywhere and in dirty boxes, and the meat is left out in the open (even in summer) and leaks a strange black/brown fluid within hours of putting in the fridge...

If you do the tacos, just remember the ingredients can be used for pizza as well, for the next day!
