so i've been using my google reader a lot lately, and staying caught up with blogs like shakesville, jezebel and io9 has been really awesome. i've felt more informed and more in touch with the world, which is good. shakesville in particular (shakespearessister.blogspot.com for those who aren't familiar) is apt to get me fired up every time i read ( Read more... )

Hmm. People are taking it poorly, but at the same time, I'm slightly frustrated by the idea that slash can't be feminist unless it passes the Bechdel test. Must ponder this.

yeah, i don't like that idea either, and if the OP had phrased it like that i probably would've pointed out the difference. idk, i don't operate from a standpoint that there's any one definitive rubric to determine whether or not a story/movie/show/whatever is feminist. there are many, the bechdel's just one. i've read tons of stories (trek and otherwise) that i consider strongly feminist that don't pass the bechdel. i think people just need to be clear when they talk about it that it's not necessarily the most important, just an interesting way to think about media.

I love the shakesville blog. It's really sort of opened my eyes to what feminist blogging is about, since from there I've been linked all over. I really had no idea that certain things, like rape and rape denial, were such a big issue. The only thing that gets me is that it's sort of exhausting getting that riled up all the time, especially when I'm not sure what to do about it. Things like her blog are helping me figure out how active I want to be, and it's a little overwhelming at times.

yeah, it is. it's hard not to let it take over your entire brain; i can see the potential to get overwhelmed, but i think the thing that's helped me avoid that is remembering what they say about the teaspoons. one teaspoon at a time, and if that means just doing what i can do in my daily life to be an example of feminism and trying to educate people about it when and where i can, that's something.

that... is very interesting, about the gender binary. and i hadn't considered it that way at all until you pointed it out. also women writing through the lens of a male space and queering it is a pretty fucking feminist thing to do-- absolutely, i agree. i think i just didn't see the OP as denying that being true, though in the absence of explicitly stating it, one could interpret it that way, for sure. TBH i just think it's interesting to see people talking about it-- especially people who don't necessarily come to slash with their feminism goggles already on, or to whom the idea of fic/slash as a vehicle for feminism is new. but thanks for weighing in, i love thinking / talking about this stuff. :D

hmmm. i think i understand you, but i don't think that's ever happened to me. what browser are you using? it sounds like a technical issue rather than an issue with the site, but i'm not familiar enough with it to say for sure.
