I think of my ten favorite movies the only ones that pass the Bechdel Test are The Princess Bride (old hag telling off Buttercup) and Little Miss Sunshine (mother and daughter). Like you, I am way more of an action/sci-fi bent... oh, if we open it up to top twenty, both Kill Bills fit, but that's a pretty outlying example of an action flick.

I was also disappointed re: Red Mist, but I read the comic so I knew he wasn't going to sack up and be a good guy. I hoped, but I didn't expect, rather.

i'm really interested in reading the comic, if only because i'm sure i'll love it, even if RM does continue to disappoint. and not at all b/c i semi-ship him and kick-ass... no. that and the graphic novels of 'the losers' are next on my comics-to-buy list.

and yes the kill bills are *awesome* examples of action movies that pass the bechdel. also all three resident evil movies. the skeleton key and stardust are not action but both pass splendidly. man, it's not even that they have to be action flicks, i just love movies where women get to be badasses. XD

...also i love your icon.

but idk, it's a little too harry osborn for me, i guess.
And I slash Kick-Ass/Red Mist just as much as I slash Spiderman/Green Goblin. XD

I discovered the Bechdel test a few months ago and it's awesome, but it's terrible that so few movies pass. The last movie I watched was St Trinian's 2, and finally a movie that passes with flying colours!

rofl yeah, i mean i definitely get both of those ships and willingly subscribe to both, but as character archetypes go i would have preferred to see red mist end up disowning his dad's business. though it is interesting looking at it in the vein of like, perhaps he'd rather be the bad guy than the sidekick. idk. either way i'll look forward to the sequel. XD

and yeah i have heard of st. trinian's but not seen it. i'll probably be putting most of my movie collection to the test next time i get around to it.

idk how i've gone this long without knowing what the bechdel test is, but since i found out recently i've been putting my recently seen and/or favorite movies through it. How weird, same here. I can't bring myself to really disapprove heavily of the movies that don't pass it, but it is interesting and good to think about. I'm kind of harder on the films that have two women who only talk to each other about men than on the ones that don't have more women in general. And I'm...affectionately inclined to give Tarantino a big pass because Death Proof passes pretty damn well.

oh tarantino in general gets a pass, he has no problems with badass women so i'm okay even if they don't talk to each other (hello, shoshanna, most awesome heroine ever) but yeah i also agree, i would watch even the most testosterone-infused action flick over "he's just not that into you" or whateverthefuck. i'd rather see the helpless/damsel stereotype than the "i'm a competent modern woman in charge of my life BUT I CAN'T GET A MAAAAAN, MY LIFE SEKRITLY SUCKS." *shudder*

coincidentally, there's a fabulous post about hit girl being a totally unique archetype at the "all things fangirl" blog.

i'm a competent modern woman in charge of my life BUT I CAN'T GET A MAAAAAN, MY LIFE SEKRITLY SUCKS And let's not forget that women can be badass but not to the point that the man needs to be saved by her. (Only partly related, but I was excited about Salt, and now I'm just pissed.)

God, your icon is adorable.

oh man, now i'm pissed too, lol. i had been excited about salt as well, but now, bleh. like that article says, you'd think in 2010 we could have some new models of heroism, strength, etc..... i guess we'll just have to keep waiting.

ikr? i found it and died of adorable. *_____*;;;;

and see it's funny b/c someone i know wrote an article about why she's not a sociopath which makes total sense to me, and made me love her even more. but yeah i agree that it's awesome for breaking the superhero mold. and unf, the soundtrack. if you do get it, upload it for me, y/y? :D :D :D and YES I SAW THE RUNAWAYS IMMEDIATELY AND DIED. randy reads it too and we both were like "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" it's so awesome! nerd mashup FTMFW.

Thanks, asshole xD. See if I ever try to have a ~LEARNING~ moment with you again. ;)

FTMFW, man. And yes, when I get it, I'm totally passing it on to you. I especially especially love the last song, sung by Mika. That's an interesting article, I hadn't thought about some of those things before. But it's essentially (sociopathy qualifications aside) what this other article was saying. She's the big action hero in the movie, the one that kicks the most ass (heeee), and she's neither a boy or an overtly sexual woman. Apparently that's more disgusting (or rather, much harder to swallow cause there's no pretty).
