"I don't get why he's doing that either," Neal admitted, and there was no question of how true that was. He knew Elle was right, of course. He just didn't think he'd worked hard enough to deserve it yet, and couldn't understand how he could have won Peter's respect and affection without it being very clear that he'd earned it.

I like this a great deal. What it makes me think is that Neal gets so got up in his con games that he forgets that people might like him for himself and that his core is good. (Not that he doesn't break the law, but I don't think he ever intentionally broke a heart.)

that's exactly it, really, he thinks of everything as a con even when it's not, like there's a set of interactions that have to happen before he can expect someone to trust or like him. oh, neal. *pets him* thanks for the comment, i'm glad you like the fic! :D

I just love your El--you did a lovely job getting her soft confidence and self-assurance across. ♥ She's so steady, and it really reads here. Caught up on your Driven 'verse, and eeee I can't wait to see how this develops! 8D You're right about Neal seeing everything as a con -- that's an aspect of his character that I really find fascinating, and the show does well in hinting at it.
