On a Roll...

Well yesterday we managed not only to unpack and put all our stuff away, we also got all the Christmas stuff back into storage, hit up Sam's Club with some friends, and snagged a few extra goods at the grocery, putting our kitchen back at full functioning capacity, aside from the two essential ingredients that are so common we forgot them. I don't ( Read more... )

I love me some Eddie Norton. :)

Jessica Biel had to FIGHT to get that role, because the directors didn't take her too seriously either until she started auditioning IN PERIOD COSTUME. Glad she got the role, though, because I'm becoming fond of her as an actress. She actually has a normal woman's figure (aka, not thin as a rake), and a wider face.

HAH. Nice recovery there on Ms. Biel.

I agree that the two were released much to closely, and honestly I don't think I was even aware of Illusionist until it came out on video. I can't compare it to The Prestige, because part of the reason Kyle and Matt thought they were renting Prestige is because none of the four of us had seen it yet - I don't even think it comes out on DVD for another few weeks.

But for The Illusionist itself, it probably ranks above average on my scale of movie goodness. There are a few things I picked at with the plot, but most of them are issues of suspension of disbelief - and while as a fantasy writer/reader I can be very lenient about that, if I'm in the right mood I can just poke holes in everything. I'd watch it again in a month or two, if someone else wanted to see it, and I'd probably pick it up in a "Buy 4 used movies for $20" deal at the rental place, if I needed a fourth. Some very good moments, but not spectacular enough to draw me out of my severe cheapness.

The Illusionist is tighter plotted than The Prestige, and it's a quieter movie. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The Prestige is more of a bang of a movie, and it's got a few holes as far as I can tell. I want to see it again, to see if I can make the pieces fit together now that I already know the ending. I'd also like to read the book.
