Creepy Christmas Album

Nov 08, 2008 20:05

So I've been thinking about putting together a dark/scary/funny Christmas mix.  Since we're not actually Christians, our celebration of the holiday is always a little odd/ironic anyway, and SS and I have found a few songs so far that amuse us.

So far:

Jingle Bells performed by the Crash Test Dummies
Deck the Halls performed by Twisted Sister

I've always been partial to Elf's Lament by the Barenaked Ladies.

Hmm.

Bob Rivers group has done a lot of funny/ironic Christmas songs. A few favorites:

The Chimney Song
I'm Dressin' Up Like Santa (When I Get out on Parole)
Hey You! Get off of My House
The Twisted Chipmunk Song/Chipmunks Roasting over an Open Fire
The 12 Pains of Christmas

A Couple of Others:

Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow - Jethro Tull (dark)
Father Christmas - The Kinks (dark/funny)
Christmas Song - Jethro Tull (darkish)

The following have lyrics that are not child appropriate, but the second is available in a bleeped version.

Merry F**king Christmas - Mr Garrison (South Park) (Foul and funny)
Holy S**T it's Christmas - Red Peters (Foul and funny)

I have no idea if they've been recorded (surely they have) but my mom used to get out the Pogo Songbook at Christmas, and play and sing from it, along with the regular carols. "Deck the halls with Boston Charlie, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Nora's freezing on the trolly, Fa la la la la....." That's all I remember at the moment. They were funny, though probably almost exclusively outdated political jokes at this point. And I don't think they're quite creepy, though they are cynical as all get-out.

I have a cd of bluegrass Christmas carols that someone gave me as a joke (it's actually pretty good). Does that count? I guess bluegrass is pretty far from "creepy" unless you can't stand it.

And of course there's the Tom Lehrer medley that starts:
"Christmas time is here by golly..." (I forget the actual title.)

I have a cheerfully awful album called "A Reggae Christmas". Variety of artists, doing reggae versions ofcarols.

"Fairytale of New York", by the Pogues.
