Positivity 4

1 - Missy and I watched the Agents of SHIELD premiere last night.  We were pretty underwhelmed, to be honest, so that isn't actually the positive thing.  After it ended, Missy asked, "Didn't we just get the new episode of Doctor Who?  Let's watch that now!"  (We get the new episodes through Nook Video, and they become available on Tuesdays.)  So we ( Read more... )

shiny things, doctor who, geekery, macgyver, memery, happily ever after

SHIELD is like that. Sometimes underwhelming and sometimes quite good.

And if I try to make three happies today, well...damn. That'd be a tough one, which I suppose is the point, so maybe later... ;)

Also, I don't get why anyone would have cable, but we do, because husband. Because sports.

I never had cable on my own -- I always balked at the cost -- but Missy originally had her brother as a housemate, so of course, cable. She likes PBS mostly, plus occasional HGTV stuff, and once in a while there would be something on a standard channel. So we still had it until this summer.

We got the digital antenna first, and got everything working before I killed the cable subscription, to make sure we had our PBS fix available without interruption! The only loss was BBC America and, alas, HGTV.

I had cable in college on my own - it was free. But otherwise I never have. I honestly don't watch anything that's not on a "free" channel, except for BBCA. (And I don't even watch Doctor Who! But I do/did watch Ripper Street - thank Amazon Prime for saving that, The Musketeers, and Being Human. Hubby watches Top Gear and Copper ( ... )

LIFE IS SO GOOD, YES?!?!?!

Haven't had cable for four years. Can't really say I miss it. REALLY don't miss the stupidly high cost of it.

DW was awesome, yes?! And Netflix definitely has the MacGyver hook-up - and I love the idea of being read to while working on something fun!! BLISS!

*HUGS*

I've been putting together a post about the details of the cable cutting -- not sure it'll be of any use to anyone, but you never know!

The biggest stumble is going to be New Year's Day. Missy has a longstanding personal tradition of watching the Tournament of Roses parade. We sacrificed HGTV with the cable hookup, and they had hands down the best coverage.

At one point in my life (mid-90s), I was living out in the woods with a very old giant dish antenna that had come with the house. We could get "wild feeds" -- picking up network shows that were being broadcast to the affiliates a few days ahead of the actual air date. Not only did we get them ahead of time, they only had half the commercials. The national ads were already embedded, but the spaces for the local ads were blank.

That is so damned cool! Wow...*Laughs*

Spoiled before Tivo had yet to hit the market!

Hah, I was spoiled from childhood. My father rigged a switch that would kill the sound on the TV -- years before remotes and mute buttons. We were NOT ALLOWED to have the sound on during the commercials, so we learned very young to mute the damned things.

Interestingly, I have noticed many times as an adult that I'm far less swayed by commercial propaganda than most people my age . . .
