It's Gen Fic Day again, and there is Bra'tac and Jaffa Soup over at sg_fignewton's place!  Here's my offering for the potluck.  Be sure to go read the rest of the buffet!

H is for Humour

“ . . . and the Setesh guard’s nose . . . drips.”

Bra’tac’s face is serious, his voice soft and low and intense, but his eyes twinkle in his scarred face as he delivers the final ( Read more... )

I'd never thought about how disrespectful that joke is, but it certainly doesn't paint a very positive picture of the Goa'uld or their guards!

I like your story of a battle well before the series; we can see what Teal'c will be and what he is at this time.

When I first had the idea ('Bra'tac tells Teal'c That Joke for the first time'), I really thought it was going to be a very different fic. Then I started writing the reaction scene from the other students, and they were very confused and shocked and as humourless as young, inexperienced boys who've been raised as fanatics are likely to be, and there it went.

I'd actually hoped it would be a more direct Bra'tac Awesomeness story. I'm looking forward to reading all the others!

about that joke where the Setesh guard's nose drips... #Stargate campylobacter June 25 2012, 16:08:25 UTC
I'm so glad I read this! I normally don't read Gen or Jaffa fic, but hey, you're on my F-List, and if the first paragraph didn't grab me, then clicking away = no harm no foul, right?

But OHHHHHHHHHHH this was so worth the read! You explained the nuance & cultural backdrop of that odd joke, obliquely referring to the context of when we first heard Teal'c tell it on the show: "Teal'c wants to laugh aloud, to throw back his head and let his laughter echo off the stones of the rough landscape around them." BECAUSE TEAL'C DID GET THAT CHANCE & YOU BROUGHT IT FULL CIRCLE.

You also captured the rhythm & grandeur of Teal'c's voice with the story's 3rd person prose style, and I like how you used present tense.

Oh, and this: "This is how it feels, to have that slight, amazing, vast edge over the enemy." Maybe Bra'tac & Teal'c are more attuned to the way their symbiotes react to the proximity of other symbiotes? hMM. Plotbunny.

Anyway, great work! Enjoyed this story a lot. :D

*pink* Thank you!! This story actually went in a completely different direction from what I had expected, including the use of present tense. It's the first story I've ever written in present tense, in fact.

So glad you liked it!

Teal’c imagines, just for a moment, what it would be like to serve a leader who could laugh freely, who could mock danger and joke in the face of death.

Nice anonymous reference to Jack!

And Teal'c's fear echoing the scenario in ? blanking on ep name, the one with the computer game he got stuck in because he didn't believe he could actually triumph.

Very much in character.

I think the episode you mean is 'Icon'. And yes, that's a future echo of Jack. Thank you!!
